Following well-received events in China, Thailand, Japan and South Korea in 2016 and 2017, The R&A recently hosted a seminar in India which promoted responsible and practical approaches to golf course design, renovation and maintenance - highlighting the ongoing work of the industry in raising the expectations for golf.

This series of seminars provided the most comprehensive sustainable education events in Asia across golf developments, renovations and course management.  The R&A Seminar on Sustainable Golf Course Design, Renovation and Maintenance in India was held in Bangalore on 19 April 2018 during day one of the 7th annual India Golf Expo (IGE) staged by the Golf Industry Association of India (GIA).

The seminar featured leading international speakers: Dominic Wall, Director – Asia Pacific at The R&A; Steve Isaac, Director – Sustainability at The R&A; Dr Micah Woods, Chief Scientist at Asian Turfgrass Center; Paul Jansen, Owner of Jansen Golf Course Design & Construction; Jonathan Smith, Chief Executive at GEO Foundation; and Mohan Subramanian, Marketing Manager – Golf Division at the RainBird Corporation.  It attracted 120 delegates representing 52 Indian golf courses, a record for an education event at the Golf Expo.

The audience at the event was a mix of course developers, owners, architects, general managers and superintendents.  The messages around sustainability received a positive response, with water availability and quality, and the potential for organic management of golf courses getting special attention.

Day two was hosted by the GIA and featured speakers talking on golf tourism, golf and real estate, and delivering a strategic plan for your club.  The two days of education ran alongside India Golf Expo (IGE) trade show, South Asia's largest golf industry exhibition.  The Expo featured many of the best known brands in course maintenance machinery, golf course irrigation, golf course design and golf equipment including Toro, Rainbird, Jacobsen, Club Car, Yamaha, Ernie Els Design, Pacific Coast Design, Titleist, FootJoy, Callaway and TaylorMade.
