Italian golf celebrates its environmental achievements

Golf clubs recognised at Italian Open awards ceremony.

On 14 October 2017, the ceremony for the Italian Golf Federation’s (IGF) national Impegnati nel Verde (INV) environmental awards was held at the Italian Open, which was being played at Golf Club Milano.

The INV awards were launched in 2000 by the Italian Golf Federation with the aims of promoting the environmental commitment of Italian golf clubs, introducing them to GEO certification and enhancing the positive image of golf.  Managed for the Italian Golf Federation by environmental consultants Marta Visentin and Stefano Boni, who are supported by IGF Green Section agronomists Massimo Mocioni and Alessandro De Luca, submissions are evaluated by a Scientific Committee, made up of leading figures of the academic community, under five categories: Water, Cultural Heritage, Energy, Biodiversity, Landscape & Environmental Restoration. The award ceremony takes place every year during the Italian Open. The awards receive very good media coverage and they have become a credible environmental recognition for golf in Italy.  Since the awards began, 47 golf clubs achieved recognition and the INV has become a lead in to GEO Certification, with 19 golf clubs entering the GEO programme after receiving INV awards and six have the Certification.  This number was added to at this year’s INV awards, with Carimate Golf Club receiving their GEO certificate at the ceremony.

This year, The R&A joined the main sponsor, Istituto per il Credito Sportivo, and the Italian Golf Federation in supporting the INV awards.

There was standing-room only in the Istituto per il Credito Sportivo marquee by the 18th green, where the ceremony was held.  Representatives from all clubs receiving awards were present, with the Presidents of most of the clubs in attendance - an indication of how prestigious the awards are considered.
